2012 EDITION

Costa Brava - National Geographic

Costa Brava Xtrem Running is intended to offer each participant an unrepeatable experience. It invites them to participate in an exciting sport combined with a spirit of improvement and sacrifice which, for several days, will allow them to feel totally free. The organisers were motivated above all by the idea that these days should be something more than a race, becoming an unforgettable memory shared with friends and family in the special surroundings of the Costa Brava.

DATES OF THE RACE

La cursa

The race will take place on 18, 19 and and 20 May, in the middle of spring, so competitors can experience and feel the warm atmosphere enjoyed on the Costa Brava at this time of year. The race departs from Sa Palomera Rock on the Seaside Promenade (Passeig Marítim) in Blanes on the 18 of May at 2:00pm. Participants must arrive 1 hours before to perform a mandatory material check.

Registrations for the XTREM race have to be submitted by 31 March 2012.

The race of 2012 will have only two modes: the Xtrem (135km in three days) and the Maritime Forest (25km in a day).

NEW FEATURES FOR 2012

The Organization of the bone race offers a new service guarantee to all participants of the type XTREM if you can not be present in the output. The offer is added to the current policy of cancellation of registration which can accommodate up all registered participants.

You can also opt to join the XTREM mode, without accommodation, if you instruct your broker on their own or do not need.

CHECK POINTS

The check points or feeding and drinking stations will be located more or less every 15km throughout the race. Numbers will be checked at each of these points by two or three volunteers. We will include physiotherapists and doctors in the long stages. Participants will also find sugar-rich products at the check points, including cakes and sweets, and also savoury products like crackers, sandwiches, cured meats and fruit, including bananas and oranges. Isotonic drinks, water and energy bars will be available.

THE COAST PATHS

The originality of this race, and what makes it unique and special, is that it runs along the Girona coast paths. The coast paths are a series of routes skirting the coves of the Costa Brava and connecting the towns and villages of the Girona coast. In the past they were used by smugglers and coastguards. They have now been recovered as very attractive walking routes as they pass through some of the most emblematic sites on the Girona coast, offering spectacular views of the coves and largely running through pine woods. The organisation has already covered all stretches of the course on different days to check its condition and to ensure that the route and way-marking are in good condition.

HISTORY

La cursa

Doing athletics, walking, hiking and all kinds of sport on the Costa Brava are becoming the most genuine way of combining sport and nature while discovering a unique region with great landscape, historical and tourist interest. Few pleasures in this life are within the reach of everyone in the way that doing sport is, and this is in an area equipped with an extensive network of services and infrastructures, making it possible to have active, exciting holidays at any time of year. Nowadays, walking or running along the Costa Brava on many coast paths, treading forest tracks amid woods and streams, or going round lagoons sown with rice plants on the Empordà plain are becoming the easiest, healthiest and most practical ways of getting to know and love the counties of Girona.

TRANSPORT

The organisers have a bus service, to transport runners and their families between stages. The organisers also have different vehicles for resolving any incident during the stages (medical care…). The organisers have taken into account the possibility of urgent transport, in the case of injury, to nearby health centres. There is also a vehicle service for transporting food and equipment throughout the race. We have a series of vehicles which will be available to runners and their families if they need them. Given that some sections of the race are on public roads, the organisation is organising the collaboration of the public security forces to ensure the safety and protection of runners as they pass through these sections.
